Access to Health Care

Dr. Florence Jameson

Dear Friend,

I want to share with you an amazing project that is unfolding here in Southern Nevada. It is called “Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada.”

Volunteers in Medicine, Southern Nevada (VMSN) was established in 2008 by a group of concerned citizens who wanted to find a way to provide access to health care to the Southern Nevada's working families. It is estimated that one out of seven are uninsured in America, approximately 400,000 in Southern Nevada. In March of 2008, Family USA, decided when writing an article on the uninsured crisis, to use Nevada as an example, in an article titled, Dying for coverage in Nevada,it was noted that more than five working age Nevadans die each week due to lack of health insurance. At VMSN, we will provide prevention and care for the chronically ill. We will help prevent acute hospitalization, reduce hospital costs and decrease taxpayer burdens. Most importantly, we will care for the neglected and unseen members of our community who are hurting.

We now have over 250 volunteers, over 70 physicians, 30 nurses, medical assistants, lab technicians, pharmacists, social workers, housekeepers, and others. Our volunteer Organization team has grown to approximately 16 people, including heath lawyers, a premier grant writer, a top executive administrator and many others. Our supporters are extensive, including Mayor Oscar Goodman, City Councilman Ricky Barlow, County Commissioners Bruce Woodbury and Lawrence Weekly, Assemblywoman Barbara Buckley, Senator Barbara Cegavske, Attorney General Catherine Cortez-Masto, HCA CEO Sylvia Young, Valley CEO Carla Perez, St. Rose CEO Rod David, Quest Diagnostics, and many major philanthropic individuals in our community. The hospitals will be donating diagnostic tests such as labs and x-rays.

It is up to us who are health care providers to be the ones to answer the need of the Southern Nevada's working families. Every person deserves quality health care. VMSN still needs many more volunteers. We are reaching out to both active and retired health care workers. Please contact me if you share the dream of helping the Southern Nevada's working families by participating in our care center that will open in 2009.

Please visit us on our website at VMSN.org and sign up on our volunteer’s page or call us at 702-994-3760.

Sincerely,

Florence Jameson and all our volunteers at VMSN
