A Black Tie Event but that's not the Real Story
Las Vegas (Oct 15) The second annual "Volunteers in Medicine" ball was held Oct 2, 2010 at the Venetian | the Palazzo Las Vegas, NV with a silent, and live auction, and to honor those who support the community. The live auction had one it's most exciting moments when one of the supporters bid over $11,000 for a puppy and gave it to Dr. Florence Jameson, the clinic's founder.
The evening began with guest being greeted by volunteer Doctors serving you wine or a special blue martini created just for the occasion. After all the guest had an opportunity to bid on items donated for the silent auction, a wonderful dinner was served by the chefs and staff at the Palazzo, and Southern Wine and Spirits of Nevada sponsored the wine selections. Master of Ceremonies for the evening, the lovely Lorraine Hunt-Bono, and Dennis Bono. Christian Kolberg served as auctioneer, and those who wished to take home a memory of the evening, were presented with a personal photo by Cashman Photo Enterprises.
Those honored were Julie Murray, Community Service Honoree. Julie is the President of Three Square – Feeding the hungry.
Dr. Rick Thiriot, DDS, Volunteerism Honoree, Bringing dental care to homeless veterans.
Dr. Joseph Quagliana, Lifetime Achievement in Medicine Honoree, Godfather of oncology, cancer diagnosis and treatment in Southern Nevada.
Entertainment was provided by Dr. Ed Kingsley – Piano, Dr. Lambert Abeyatunge – Saxophone, Dr. Moniz Dawood – Keyboard, Dr. Arezo Fathie & Dr. Sam Mujica – Vocals
Many individuals and corporations offered their support by contributing, or sponsoring tables. The clinic’s success depends on their continued support.
It was an evening of fundraising and seeing those who received recognition for their commitment to the community. But the volunteers are the real story. The one clinic, located at 4770 Harrison Drive, Suite 105, Las Vegas, NV 89121 - 702-967-0530, has only three paid employees. Everyone else is a volunteer. The Doctors, nurses, social workers, psychiatrists, pharmacists, lawyers, grant writers, and even the housekeepers, security, and the clerical staff who greet the patients are volunteers.
Patients are seen by appointment only, and scheduled when Doctors are available to see them. The care is free of charge but the eligibility requirements are strict. All new patients go through an eligibility screening process, and must be citizens of the United States, and a resident of Clark County, NV for a minimum of three months. Along with other eligibility requirements, Income is verified and must not be more than 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) guidelines.
To quote Dr. Florence Jameson, founder of the clinic, "Our primary objective at Volunteers in Medicine is to deliver much needed health care, and in the process, extend a charitable and hopeful hand to the underserved in our community." "Our mission is to deliver health care, rekindle hope, and to be a heart of giving."
Another clinic is scheduled to open as soon as possible, and will be located on Martin Luther King Boulevard and Madison. Millions are needed to meet the challenge. To donate visit the website at vmsn.org, or contact Mario at Mario @vmsn.org, or call (702) 967-0531.
