Please meet one of our many volunteers!

Lori Wockenfuss
What inspired you to join Volunteers in Medicine of Southern Nevada?
After being retired for several years, I decided I missed nursing and this is one way to stay involved. Also while talking to people, I found so many small business owners, beauticians, etc. can't afford health insurance. These people help me, so it is one way I can help them besides patronizing their businesses.
Why do you enjoy making Las Vegas your home?
When I came here in 1961, I didn't like the desert that much. The sand storms were really bad since there was so much vacant land. After awhile the beauty of the desert came through and every day there is something new to see (lights and shadows on the mountains and new construction) that holds your interest.
What does “giving back” mean to you?
Helping the people that help make the community comfortable to live in--the dog groomers, kind taxi drivers, store clerks, etc. Since retiring, this is the one way I can do that.
What’s special to you about Southern Nevada?
The low humidity. The mountains. The fact that I have watched this valley grow from a small community to the place it is now. Any place in the world that I visit, people ask where I am from. I just have to say Las Vegas. No other explanation is needed
How long have you lived in Las Vegas?
I have lived in Las Vegas a total of 34 years.
Brief bio?
Originally from Idaho, I graduated from nurses’ training at French Hospital in San Francisco, CA. I spent 4 years on active duty in the United States Air Force. I was the first nurse in the active hospital reserve unit at Nellis Air Force Base and worked at Sunrise Hospital for 18 years.
